Dear parents

We are now well into the third term and it has definitely lived up to the notion that the third quarter in the school year is the most action packed and by far the busiest. Needless to say, the Primary School campus is abuzz with excitement, as both the Senior and Junior Primary concert rehearsals are in full swing with our budding singers, actors and actresses being put through their paces by the teacher’s co-ordinating the events. Both of these productions come off the back of a highly successful High School Fashion Show and Primary School Windermere Art Exhibition which once again showcased the tremendously talented and creative children, which make Embury College such a uniquely diversified institution, which caters for Learners of all intelligences.

Below I have listed some recent developments which need to be taken careful note of:

· Security: Owing to the unfortunate incident which occurred on the last day of the second term, our security has been significantly improved. The following measures have been taken to ensure the safety of our children, staff and parents:

- Security cameras within and on the perimeters of both High School and Primary School campuses have been installed.

- In addition to our permanent car-guard, you would have noticed that we have employed an additional two security personnel on a permanent basis.

- As with the office on the High School premises, the Primary school office will have an additional security gate installed that needs to be buzzed on entry.

- Our security company is supplying the staff with a cell phone operated system, by which they can make emergency contact with the company with the ‘push of a button’.

- The side gate on the Primary School campus has been permanently bolted shut.

- A Trellidor has been fitted in House 1 for the benefit of the Aftercare programme, which uses this house as an exit point in the afternoons.

· ‘My School’: Although we have previously attempted to ‘roll-out’ the My School programme, we have only received a limited response. Additional forms were handed-out to parents a few weeks ago and we urge parents to please apply and begin ‘swiping’ your My School cards at the participating retailers. It costs the parent nothing but is an easy method of raising funds for the benefit of your child’s schooling.

· D6 Communicator: On Tuesday the 23rd of August, we will be launching Embury College’s D6 communicator. The system will be explained via a newsletter, which will accompany a CD for each parent to download onto their PC’s. The Communicator is ensured of revolutionizing communication with our parent body and is currently being used successfully in various schools nationwide.

· Development of further Multi-Turf facility at Embury Primary: A decision was taken recently to develop the area on the side of the Senior House by Mrs Naicker’s classroom, into another practically usable playground facility for the children. Consequently, the veranda and storeroom which were there have been demolished, and the area has been smoothed in preparation for multi-turf to be laid. The project will be completed within the next couple of weeks and I am sure that our children are going to relish the opportunity of another ‘green’ to play on!

· Change in Grade 3: It is with great regret that we have to bid farewell to Mrs Walker in Grade 3. Mrs Walker has been a part of the Primary School staff for the past 5 years and she will be sorely missed both as an Educator, colleague and friend. We wish her the best of luck in Hong Kong, where she will be taking up a post in the near future. She will be replaced on a permanent basis by Miss Hayley Woodley, who we warmly welcome into the Embury family.

Finally, tickets for both our concerts are running out fast, and we urge parents to book their seats as soon as possible. Both shows promise to be highly entertaining and enjoyable events which simply cannot be missed!

The first term is under our belts and we have had a busy few weeks to report back on. I had the privilege of welcoming some of the Grade 1 learners and am in amazement at the growth of our school. I have every confidence that the year ahead will be a rewarding, adventurous time for all and look forward to bringing you all the news in The Gift of the Gab. - Miss N Turner

Grade 1 goes tripple steam!!

For the first time in our proud history, we have three Grade 1 classes in the Foundation Phase! Mrs Romer, Mrs Bierman and Miss van Winkel welcomed a high-spirited group of learners into their classrooms on the first day and judging from the many smiles and giggles, they have settled in quite nicely!

As the school continues to grow; each year brings exciting additions and this year is certainly no different.

We wish all of our new Grade 1 learners the very best for the year and will keep a close eye on their adventures throughout the year!

Astro-Nomical News

The Embury College Astro Sports Turf is in its developmental stages and the plans are underway to have it up and running by mid-way through the second term this year!

The facility will accommodate all Foundation Phase and Intermediate Phase Physical Education during the winter season, and various extra-mural sports from Grade 1 to 12.

An exciting prospect for the learners and coaching staff at Embury.

Embury Interact Club in the papers

Embury College Interact Club is affiliated to the Rotary Club of Durban Bay and its aim is to help those less fortunate. Bianca Finch from the Embury College Interact Club, said: “We have identified a rural school in Ntuzuma which we try and help in any way possible.” The club also gave a wheelchair, netball and soccer kit, stationery sponsored by Waltons, as well as some books brought in by pupils, to the needy school. Principal of Hilda Makhanya School, Nokulunga Majola, was very grateful for the donations from the Interact Club Members.

February 2011

Well it has really been a fantastically smooth beginning to our new year at Embury College! The year started most positively with the news about the noteworthy achievements obtained by the Matriculants of 2010. The group not only obtained a 100% pass rate but several distinctions where acquired and over 80% of the learners gained University entrance. Needless to say, these results made our staff and parents exceptionally proud of our Matriculants.

In these past few weeks, very few tears have been shed by our new Grade 1’s and our fresh intake of Learners in Grade 8, and indeed across the various Grades, have settled incredibly well into the daily procedure of both the Primary and High School campuses. What is truly wonderful at Embury, is how the warm and loving environment provided, makes this transition so much easier and the family atmosphere that exists, as well as our exceptionally accommodating “old” Embury children, remain one of the cornerstones of our schools ethical and moral stature.

Our Grade 8’s had a wonderful time at “Spirit of Adventure” during the first few days of Term and were able to bond as a group before returning to school the following Monday. The practice of our Grade 8’s going on excursion during the first few days of the new school year is highly beneficial to their transition into High School, and provides the children with the opportunity of getting to know each other in an informal setting, before commencing in a new academic environment.

It was also wonderful meeting all the new and existing parents at our various functions held in the Hall last week. It is always nice for our parents to meet with their children’s respective teachers so as to ensure that the lines of communication are made readily accessible from the outset. We would like to thank the parents for attending these beneficial gatherings and hope to see all our Foundation Phase parents once again, at the “Movie and Braai” evening to be held on Friday the 4th of March.

Other important dates to diarize are as follows:

· Grade 8 – 12 Market Day – Friday the 18th of February

· Grade 9 and 10 Excursions - Dates to be advised

· J.P and S.P Swimming Galas – Friday the 18th of March

· Matric Dance – Friday the 25th of March

· Matric Dance Fashion Show – Thursday the 31 March

Finally, our Sport and Cultural programme is in full – swing and I would like to take this opportunity to urge our parent body to get behind their children in this regard. Not only are the health benefits from playing sport highly beneficial but the lessons learnt via team participation and the culture of sport in general, are immeasurable for young children. At Embury therefore, participation and involvement are key, and our Sport Co – Ordinator Ms. Noleen Turner and her team of coaches will ensure the provision of an exciting and enjoyable environment for the Learners. We wish our budding Sportsmen and Sportswomen the best of luck in 2011!

I wish all parties concerned an enjoyable and productive 2011.

Soccer World Cup Fever At Embury

The children at Embury, in preparation for the World Cip, learnt the proudly South African “Diski Dance” as part of their 2^nd Term Movement Curriculum. Learning the tricky and rhythmic choreography was a lot of fun!

The children were required to take being a Bafana Badana supported to another level. When performing the “Diski Dance” on the green for tee newspaper, they were dressed in supporters gear, had brightly painted faces and enjoyed blowing their vuvuzela’s! This memorable event kick-started the Soccer World Cup 2010 for everyone at Embury!

Our Visitors From Argentina

The Soccer World Cup had just come to an end, and out 3^rd term had just begun. On the 15^th July 2010, the children of Embury were in for a real treat! On Embury’s home soil, we welcomed 3 special visitors from Argentina. Their names were Matias, Santiago and Francisco.

They demonstrated some amazing soccer tricks, which had everybody cheering, they even had children participating playing the much loved game “Co-Ca-Co-La”

In return, our very own “Diski Dancers” showed our visitors from Argentina what they had been working on – all in the spirit of the Soccer World Cup! We will never forget the day the 3 Argentina Soccer Stars came to our school!
